About the event

Meeting Point: The Pavilion in Heaton Park.

In the green spaces in Newcastle, there is so much wonder, medicine and story that the land holds, reminding us about right relations, reciprocity & wellness. We will immerse ourselves in this wilder world by exploring the seasonal, local wild edible plants and their stories in Heaton & Armstrong Park.

In this outdoor activity you will have the opportunity to train your eyes to see the plenty that surrounds us in nature. You will be invited to connect deeply and somatically to the environment and to listen to the land through simple mindfulness practices which will help you to develop deeper relationship with and understanding of the beings in these wilder green spaces in the city.

You will learn how to forage sustainably and how to give thanks to the land and the plant beings who share their medicine with you. You will learn the medicinal properties of the herbs we encounter and how to use them for remedies, food, art and rituals.

We will also make jams & pickles with the foraged ingredients and locally grown seasonal fruits & vegetables. Bring your own jar to take some home. We will share food and stories around a fire.

And lastly you will receive A Herbal Guide to  to take home which will help you with plant identification and experimenting in your own kitchen with the plants we collect. Covered will be things like how to dry and preserve the herbs, their medicinal uses, recipes and easy to make herbal remedies as well as some plant-lore.

Activities include:

  • Sensory Exploration of Heaton & Armstrong Park
  • Foraging for berries, seeds, nuts & roots ( the seasonal local wild edibles)
  • Sharing Plant-Lore & medicinal properties of the plants on the walk
  • Wild cooking on a fire - Brewing Tea with the foraged herbs, making herbal vinegars & Sugar-Free wild Fuit Spread/Jam to take home (in the spirit of recycling and reusing, please bring your own jars)
  • Picnic Time -  enjoying pre- made food with wildcrafted ingredients around the fire in a circle with stories and songs
  • Closing the space with a flower mandala
